چکیده

We present Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) observations of several OH, CH and H2O rotational lines toward the bright infrared galaxies NGC 253 and NGC 1068. As found in the Galactic clouds in Sgr B2 and Orion, the extragalactic far–IR OH lines change from absorption to emission depending on the physical conditions and distribution of gas and dust along the line of sight. As a result, most of the OH rotational lines that appear in absorption toward NGC 253 are observed in emission toward NGC 1068. We show that the far–IR spectrum of OH can be used as a powerful diagnostic to derive the physical conditions of extragalactic neutral gas. In particular, we find that a warm (Tk∼150 K, n(H2).5×10 4 cm) component of molecular gas with an OH abundance of ≃10 from the inner .15 can qualitatively reproduce the OH lines toward NGC 253. Similar temperatures but higher densities (∼5×10 cm) are required to explain the OH emission in NGC 1068. The SWS survey for rotational H2 lines in late-type galaxies

We report the first extragalactic detection of the pure rotational H2 S(0) and S(1) lines at 28.2 and 17.0 m in the central 130 pc molecular complex of the nearby Scd galaxy NGC 6946. We deduce a temperature of this gas component of 170 K and a mass of 5 106 M for an ortho/para ratio of 3, corresponding to the ratio of statistical weights. The warm gas is confined to a 500 (135 pc) diameter reg...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Evidence for Co Shock Excitation in Ngc 6240 from Herschel Spire Spectroscopy

We present Herschel SPIRE FTS spectroscopy of the nearby luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240. In total 20 lines are detected, including CO J = 4 − 3 through J = 13 − 12, 6 H2O rotational lines, and [C i] and [N ii] fine-structure lines. The CO to continuum luminosity ratio is 10 times higher in NGC 6240 than Mrk 231. Although the CO ladders of NGC 6240 and Mrk 231 are very similar, UV and/or X-ra...

Direct Evidence of Cold Gas in Dla 0812+32b

We present the first direct evidence for cold gas in a high redshift DLA galaxy. We measured several multiplets of weak neutral carbon (C I ) transitions in order to perform a curve of growth analysis. A ∆χ test constrains the best fit Doppler parameter, b = 0.33 −0.04km s −1 , and logN(C I) = 13.30±0.2 cm. This Doppler parameter constrains the kinetic temperature of the gas to T ≤ 78 K (T ≤ 11...

The Far-ultraviolet Spectrum of Ngc 4151 as Observed with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope on Astro-2

We observed NGC 4151 on six separate occasions at intervals of 1 to 3 days using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope during the flight of Astro-2 aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in 1995 March. The far-UV spectra cover the spectral range from the interstellar cutoff at 912 to 1840 Å with a resolution of 2–4 Å. The mean spectrum, representing 4752 s of integration time, has a signal-to-noise rat...
